Sabari Varman, a 34-year-old differently-abled man, was arrested on July 9, 2026, from Eeththankaadu near Suchindram, on allegations of possessing banned gutka. Just days later, on July 13, he tragically died under suspicious circumstances while in custody at the Nagercoil jail. This incident has sparked outrage and demands for a thorough investigation.
His family, supported by various organizations, refused to accept his body and insisted on a proper inquiry into the events leading to his death. Superintendent of Police Stalin promptly visited the prison to conduct an initial investigation, questioning warders and other prison officials. He assured the grieving family and protesters that action would be taken based on the findings of the post-mortem report and his investigation.
