UK Record Heatwave Ends: Heavy Rain and Cooler Temps on the Way

The record-breaking heatwave that gripped the UK over the past week is officially coming to a soggy end. After days of sweltering temperatures that saw May records shattered, a wave of fresher Atlantic air is moving in, bringing much cooler temperatures and a significant amount of rain to most of the country.

This past Tuesday marked a historic peak for the month of May, with temperatures soaring to a blistering 35.1C (95.2F) at London's Kew Gardens. Cardiff also saw record highs, reaching 32.9C. The intense "heat dome" caused by high pressure trapping warm air led to widespread amber and yellow health alerts. Sadly, the extreme weather was also linked to tragedy, with at least 14 people reported to have died after getting into difficulty in water during the hot spell.

As we transition into meteorological summer, the weather landscape is shifting dramatically. The stubborn high pressure is being replaced by low-pressure systems steered by a stronger jet stream. This means that instead of clear skies, we can expect unsettled conditions and outbreaks of rain starting Monday. Some parts of the UK, particularly in the west, could see heavy downpours with up to 8mm of water falling per hour.

By mid-week, the unseasonably hot weather will be a distant memory. Forecasts suggest maximum temperatures will drop to between 15C and 20C. While sun-seekers might be disappointed, the rain is a welcome sight for gardeners and farmers, especially in the southern and eastern parts of England which have faced a very dry spring. Heading into Tuesday, don't be surprised if you hear a few rumbles of thunder, as heavy showers and lightning are also on the cards.
