Class 6 Girl Dies After 100 Sit-Ups Punishment in Maharashtra School
A Class 6 student in Palghar, Maharashtra, died days after being forced to perform 100 sit-ups for lateness, prompting a probe into school punishment practices.
Anshika Gaud, a Class 6 student at a private school in Sativali, Vasai area of Palghar district, died days after she was allegedly made to perform 100 sit-ups as punishment for arriving late on November 8. She passed away in a Mumbai hospital on Friday night.
Her mother has claimed the punishment was inhumane and contributed to her daughter's deteriorating health, saying Anshika developed neck and back pain after the exercise and could not get up afterward. The family said they confronted the school over the incident.
A local Maharashtra Navnirman Sena leader stated that the punishment may have caused the death, while a school teacher indicated that it is not clear how many sit-ups were actually performed. The teacher stressed that punishment should not harm students.
Block Education Officer Pandurang Galange said an inquiry is underway to determine the exact cause of Anshika’s death, and no police complaint had been filed at the time. The incident has sparked debate about disciplinary practices in schools and the safety of students, with officials promising a thorough review.
