In a significant turn of events in a high-profile murder case, singer D4vd, whose real name is David Anthony Burke, has officially pleaded not guilty to the murder of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez. The plea was entered in a Los Angeles court on Monday, August 31, as the legal drama surrounding the musician intensifies.
Further adding to the unfolding saga, D4vd's high-profile defense team, comprising Blair Berk, Marilyn Bednarski, and Regina Peter, has withdrawn from representing him. Their request to be removed from the case was approved by the court. Following this development, a public defender has been appointed to represent Burke, with reports indicating his "indigent status" or lack of funds as the reason for the change.
Prosecutors have accused Burke of the brutal murder of Hernandez, alleging he dismembered her body with a chainsaw in his garage after purchasing tools online.
Burke was formally charged with her murder on April 20.
He had previously pleaded not guilty to charges of murdering and sexually abusing the teenager.
The grim discovery of Hernandez's severely decomposed remains was made last September, found in the front boot of a Tesla registered to Burke. After a rigorous five-day preliminary hearing held at the end of July, during which Los Angeles prosecutors presented a dozen witnesses and photographic evidence, a judge ruled that Burke would stand trial for the murder.
The victim's family was reportedly present in court during these proceedings.
Despite their withdrawal, Burke's former legal team issued a statement expressing their gratitude that the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office has taken over, noting their confidence in the new team. They added that they would "continue to support David and his defence against these serious charges." The next court date for D4vd is scheduled for October 19.
