The political landscape in Karnataka has been significantly stirred following the recent elections to the Legislative Council, where the Congress party emerged victorious, securing five of the seven contested seats. This win is particularly noteworthy as it came amidst widespread speculation of cross-voting, which ultimately benefited the Congress.
Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar is undoubtedly buoyed by these results, marking a strong political triumph in his first election challenge since taking over the helm from his predecessor, Siddaramaiah. The Congress candidates – B.K. Hariprasad, B.S. Shivanna, P.V. Mohan, Thippannappa Kamaknoor, and Vinay Karthik – successfully clinched their seats.
Conversely, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)), found themselves in an embarrassing situation. The Congress reportedly gained 11 votes through cross-voting from NDA members. The BJP, which managed to secure only two seats for its candidates Lingaraj Patil and R. Raghu, lost at least three votes due to internal dissent. Lingaraj Patil, despite being allocated 30 votes, only received 27, winning after an elimination round. One vote for R. Raghu was also declared invalid.
The JD(S) suffered a significant blow, losing at least four votes, with its candidate Govindraju securing only 14 votes despite the party's strength of 18 members in the Legislative Assembly. This discrepancy sparked immediate tensions within the NDA, with the BJP alleging that some of its members had voted for the JD(S) candidate, a claim the regional party swiftly refuted.
The cross-voting incident has starkly exposed the existing rifts and factionalism within the BJP's State unit. With Assembly polls looming just two years away, this internal strife is likely to prompt the party's high command to exert greater control over its Karnataka operations.
