Mihir Vardhan shocked the auto world by converting his Hyundai Santro into a fully electric vehicle. The project took only three days. The cost? Just ₹2.4 lakh.
Instead of removing the entire engine, only the cylinder head and pistons were taken out. The lower block stayed. A compact motor was mounted directly on the block. This powered the wheels, AC compressor, and steering pump.
For battery and charging a lithium ferrophosphate battery was fitted in the trunk. It runs at 72 volts. The fuel port was cleverly repurposed as the charging port.
Brakes And Auxiliary Systems
Without the engine, the brake booster lost its vacuum source. An electric vacuum pump solved the issue. A 72V-to-12V converter kept the car’s auxiliary battery charged. Lights, locks, and windows worked seamlessly.
Performance Numbers
The converted Santro delivers a range of about 80 km. Top speed is 60 km/h. Running cost is less than ₹1 per km. The motor produces only 8 horsepower, but the gearbox makes it usable in city traffic.
Quirks That Stand Out
Despite being electric, the car still needs engine oil. The crankshaft and block remain, so lubrication is essential. It’s an EV with a gearbox and oil changes, a rare combination.
This project proves EV conversion can be affordable and practical. While commercial kits often cost Rs 4 to 6 lakh and take weeks, this DIY approach was faster and cheaper. It shows how innovation can make sustainable mobility accessible.
