Rapper-turned-mayor Balendra Shah Leads Nepal’s Landslide Election Win

Nepal’s nationwide election, the first since Gen Z-led protests toppled the previous government, is unfolding with mounting expectations. The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), a centrist outfit founded three years ago and led by 35-year-old Balendra Shah, appears headed for a landslide as counting progresses in the first-past-the-post segment. With about 165 seats decided so far out of 275, Shah’s party has surged past traditional rivals in a sign of voters turning away from established parties.

Early trends show former prime minister Oli’s Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) leading in nine seats, while the Nepali Congress is ahead in 12. The former rapper is also leading Oli in Oli’s home constituency Jhapa 5 near the Indian border, underscoring Shah’s appeal beyond traditional urban bases.

The chief election commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari has pledged to guarantee a credible and peaceful counting process, signaling the importance of this vote as Nepal seeks stable governance after protests. As results trickle in, observers say a Shah-led coalition could redefine Nepal’s policy priorities and how parties respond to public demand for accountability.

The election is reshaping Nepal’s political landscape, with many waiting to see how a party born from street protests and social media will build government and work with other parties.
