Germany Pushes to Produce Patriot Missiles Amid Global Shortage
Germany seeks US approval to manufacture advanced Patriot air-defense interceptors domestically, aiming to alleviate critical global shortages and boost European security. A crucial move.
Berlin is stepping up to address a critical global shortage of advanced Patriot air-defense interceptors. Germany is actively seeking approval from the United States to manufacture these essential missiles on its own soil. This initiative comes as rising demand and depleted stockpiles put immense pressure on the global supply of these crucial defense systems.
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has put forward a proposal for Germany to produce US weapons in Europe, specifically including Patriot interceptors.
This move aims to expand defense production capacity and ease the burden on American manufacturers.
The proposal follows a prior agreement between Germany and the US designed to facilitate additional production of US weaponry within Germany.
The plan includes the potential production of PAC-3 MSE and PAC-2 GEM-T interceptors, as well as other vital components of the Patriot system, such as launchers. Germany already has a significant role in the Patriot supply chain, with MBDA Germany involved in producing PAC-2 interceptors, while Lockheed Martin manufactures the more advanced PAC-3 MSE.
Berlin is now eager to expand this industrial role to significantly increase overall production capacity. The urgent need to boost Patriot production stems from a sharp depletion of interceptor stockpiles, primarily due to extensive use by US forces and allies in Europe and the Middle East, and crucially, Ukraine's heavy reliance on the system to counter Russian missile attacks.
Reports indicate that Patriot stocks among American and NATO forces in Europe have reached a “beyond critical” level.
Replenishing these stocks is not a quick process, with estimates suggesting a production timeline of around 42 months for a PAC-3 MSE interceptor. Lockheed Martin is working to ramp up annual production capacity from approximately 600 interceptors to 2,000, targeting this goal by the end of 2030.
Ukraine, which faces an acute shortage of Patriot interceptors, has reportedly been informed by President Zelensky that the US, under former President Trump's decision, would allow Ukraine to make Patriot missiles. While details on this specific claim are sparse in available reports, it underscores the widespread and critical demand for these sophisticated air defense systems.
Germany's push for local production is therefore a significant step towards bolstering not only its own defense capabilities but also contributing to the security of its allies and easing global supply pressures.
