FTC Slams Amazon with Lawsuit Over Alleged "Hidden Surcharges" on Ads!
The FTC and 22 states are suing Amazon, claiming it secretly overcharged advertisers by billions! Find out how this legal battle could reshape digital advertising.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has launched a major lawsuit against e-commerce giant Amazon, alleging the company "secretly and systematically overcharged" advertisers on its platform. This legal action, joined by 22 state attorneys general, claims Amazon manipulated its pricing and auction systems, potentially reaping over $20 billion from advertisers since 2019.
According to the FTC, Amazon misled millions of advertising customers into paying significantly higher prices through "hidden surcharges." FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson stated that these increased costs were largely passed on to American consumers. The lawsuit focuses on Amazon's sponsored products ads, brands ads, and display ads that appear alongside search results on its vast online store.
Amazon, which boasts the third-largest digital advertising business globally after Google and Meta, generated over $68 billion in ad revenue last year. The complaint highlights concerns from third-party sellers who have criticized surging advertising costs and recent policy changes on the platform, with some even boycotting ad spending.
In response, Amazon has vehemently denied the allegations, calling the FTC's lawsuit "misguided." In a blog post, the company asserted that the complaint "fundamentally misunderstands how advertisers operate" and lacks evidence of consumer price increases. Amazon claims its auction systems have actually saved advertisers $8 billion between 2021 and 2025, rather than costing them extra.
The company stated it provides clear guidance to advertisers about its systems and looks forward to presenting its case in court.
The lawsuit was filed in the U.S.
District Court for the Western District of Washington.
