PM Modi's Indonesia Visit: A New Era for Indo-Pacific Strategic Ties?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is embarking on a pivotal visit to Indonesia, signaling a renewed push to elevate bilateral ties into one of India’s most valuable strategic partnerships. This visit aims to transform what has been described as an "under-realized" relationship between the two Indo-Pacific giants. India and Indonesia, both significant democracies and major maritime powers, share a common vision as G20 members and influential voices in the Global South.

Despite shared strategic interests and deep civilizational connections, the contemporary partnership between these nations has yet to reach its full potential. PM Modi’s visit presents a crucial opportunity to establish a robust framework for long-term cooperation, emphasizing mutual development, cutting-edge technological collaboration, maritime security, and shared economic resilience.

The relationship gained significant momentum during Indonesian President Prabowo’s visit to India in January 2025, which coincided with the celebration of 75 years of diplomatic relations. During that visit, agreements were inked across various sectors including health, digital cooperation, maritime security, traditional medicine, and cultural exchanges, showcasing a broadening agenda for collaboration. PM Modi’s current visit is expected to convert these promising agreements into tangible, measurable outcomes.

Historically, India and Indonesia have enjoyed exceptional goodwill, stemming from their cooperation during anti-colonial struggles and their joint participation in the Bandung movement, which laid the groundwork for a multipolar international order. This shared history has provided a durable political foundation. In recent years, naval cooperation has steadily expanded through coordinated patrols and joint maritime exercises, and defence ties have deepened, with Indonesia showing interest in Indian defence equipment like the BrahMos missile system. Cultural exchanges remain vibrant, and Indian investment in Indonesia has been gradually increasing.

However, the economic relationship still has considerable room for growth. The current bilateral trade, standing at approximately $30 billion, is widely considered to be below its potential. While Indian investment has grown, it remains significantly smaller compared to other nations. This visit is thus a critical step in addressing these economic disparities and fostering a more robust and equitable economic partnership. The focus areas during PM Modi’s trip—digital technology, defence, critical minerals, and maritime security—underscore a strategic alignment aimed at enhancing both nations' capabilities and influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
