Kemi Badenoch Unveils £10bn "Britannia Shield" Against Missile Threats 🛡️🇬🇧
Kemi Badenoch reveals an ambitious £10bn 'Britannia Shield' to protect the UK from missile and drone attacks. Learn how this defense system, inspired by Israel's Iron Dome, aims to secure Britain's future.
Kemi Badenoch has pledged to build a new £10 billion 'Britannia Shield' missile interception system designed to protect the United Kingdom from future military attacks. The announcement was made on the third day of the Conservative Party's annual conference in Birmingham, where Ms Badenoch outlined her vision for strengthening national security.
The proposed 'Britannia Shield' would comprise a sophisticated network of radar, command and control systems, interceptor missiles, and counter-drone capabilities.
Ms Badenoch highlighted the urgency of such a system, stating, "The world will not wait for Britain to get ready.
War has returned to Europe.
Missiles and drones are transforming warfare in the Middle East." She emphasized that cheap weapons now pose a significant threat to cities, military bases, and critical infrastructure, and that Britain cannot afford to be unprepared.
The Conservatives aim to have the 'Britannia Shield' fully operational by the end of their first term in government if elected at the next general election. The system is understood to be modelled on Israel's highly effective Iron Dome defence system, which has a reported 99 per cent interception success rate since 2023.
Ms Badenoch also accused Labour of failing to keep the country safe and proposed funding her defence plans by reforming welfare, including reinstating the two-child benefit cap and reforming housing benefit.
Further details are expected to be unveiled by James Cartlidge, a prominent figure in Conservative defence discussions.
He is anticipated to outline a timeline of five years for the system to achieve 'minimum deployable capability,' with further improvements planned over the subsequent five years.
The need for such a system has been underscored by warnings from the UK defence committee, which noted late last year that Britain currently possesses "next to nothing" in terms of integrated air and missile defences and highlighted the increasing prevalence of aerial drone threats.
Currently, the UK largely relies on its six Type 45 destroyer ships for missile interceptions, all of which are slated for replacement by 2038. While the government has allocated £298 billion for defence investment over the next four years, only a fraction has been specifically dedicated to protecting the UK and its overseas bases from aerial threats.
Labour has also committed to increasing defence spending to at least 3.5 per cent of GDP by 2035, indicating a cross-party recognition of the need for robust defence capabilities.
