Cyclone Ditwah Set to Bring Heavy Rains to Andhra Pradesh

An alert has been issued as a depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal intensified into Cyclone Ditwah, moving north-northwest and likely to strengthen in the next 12 hours. Officials say the system is expected to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds to South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and the Rayalaseema region, with the coastline bracing for impact between the evening of November 29 and the morning of November 30.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast for districts including Chittoor, Tirupati, Nellore, Prakasam, YSR Kadapa, Annamayya and Sri Sathya Sai for two days starting November 29, while broader regions in the south coastal belt could see persistent rain for up to three days. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into rough seas as conditions deteriorate, and farmers are urged to take necessary precautions against strong winds and intense downpours hitting several mandals.

District administrations have activated control rooms to coordinate emergency responses and issue alerts to vulnerable habitations. The India Meteorological Department notes that the cyclone is likely to intensify further as it moves closer to the coast, with rainfall and wind impact expected to grow. The cyclone is centered northwest of Batticaloa and Hambantota in Sri Lanka, and is forecast to move toward the Southwest Bay of Bengal, with potential effects on north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Residents in the affected districts should monitor official advisories and prepare for possible disruption to travel, power supply and agricultural activities. Authorities emphasize remaining indoors during heavy rain bands and checking on neighbors, especially the elderly and those in low-lying areas.
