Moscow Crocus City Hall attack: 19 convicted, life terms handed

A Moscow court handed down convictions in the February 2024 Crocus City Hall attack case, sending 19 people to prison after a trial that followed one of Russia's deadliest terror incidents in years. The Crocus City Hall venue, in the Moscow area, was struck by four gunmen who opened fire on concert-goers before setting the building ablaze, killing 149 people and injuring more than 600.

Fifteen defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment, one received 22 and a half years, and three others were given 19 years and 11 months each. The trial began in August 2025 in a military court, a common venue for terrorism cases, and proceedings were held behind closed doors due to security concerns. Those tried included suspects who provided support—renting a car, an apartment, or facilitating the gunmen—along with ten others accused of terrorist ties, according to independent Russian reporting.

Authorities said the attack was planned to destabilize Russia's leadership; a faction of the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the atrocity. Some gunmen attempted to flee to Ukraine after the assault, a claim Russia has repeatedly used to accuse Kyiv, though Kyiv denies involvement. The Investigative Committee described the assault as meticulously planned and carried out in the interests of the current Ukrainian leadership to sow chaos.

Even as the verdicts land, the country continues to confront the trauma of that night. Memorials and security measures have been heightened, and families of victims pressed for accountability. The case also raises questions about transparency, given the closed-door nature of the trial, and about the broader fight against regional terrorism that Moscow says remains a top priority for years ahead.
