India and Cyprus Elevate Ties to Strategic Partnership with New Defense Roadmap
India and Cyprus strengthen bonds with a 5-year defense roadmap, counter-terror pacts, and new deals in fintech and education. A major boost for strategic ties!
India and Cyprus have officially upgraded their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership, marking a significant milestone in their diplomatic history. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides met to finalize several key agreements aimed at deepening cooperation across defense, technology, and economic sectors.
One of the most notable outcomes of the talks is a comprehensive five-year defense cooperation roadmap spanning from 2026 to 2031. This agreement will focus on joint training, military exercises, and closer security coordination. Both nations also announced the creation of a joint force to counter terrorism and the establishment of a cyber security dialogue to address modern digital threats and protect digital infrastructure.
On the economic front, the leaders highlighted the growing investment between the two nations, with Cypriot investment in India nearly doubling over the last decade. Looking forward, PM Modi emphasized that the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement will open even more doors, with a goal to double investments once again over the next five years. To support this vision, new Memorandums of Understanding were signed to boost digital infrastructure, fintech, and research collaboration.
The partnership also extends to the people, with plans for a comprehensive Migration and Mobility Agreement. This, alongside a Social Security Agreement, is designed to protect the rights of professionals working in both countries and facilitate smoother student exchanges and scientific cooperation. President Christodoulides reaffirmed Cyprus’s unwavering support for India’s permanent seat in a reformed United Nations Security Council, solidifying the mutual respect and long-standing friendship between the two nations.
