Karnataka's political landscape saw a significant shift on August 3 as Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar expanded his cabinet, inducting 20 new ministers. This move comes two months after Shivakumar's initial swearing-in and sees the Congress party filling its entire cabinet quota, contrary to earlier speculation of leaving berths vacant.
Among the 20 newly sworn-in ministers, 10 are fresh faces, bringing new energy to the administration. Seven ministers who previously served under former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah have also made a comeback, ensuring a mix of experience and novelty. The swearing-in ceremony took place at 4:05 PM at Lok Bhavan in Bengaluru, marking a pivotal moment for the state government.
Interestingly, the list of ministers underwent a last-minute revision. While the AICC initially released one list in the morning, it was updated by afternoon, replacing Mankal Vaidya with S.S. Mallikarjun. This eleventh-hour change highlights the intense political maneuvering behind cabinet formation.
A notable inclusion is Ms. A.V. Gayatri Shanthegowda, who stands as the lone woman in the 34-member cabinet. Her path to the cabinet is particularly unique; she is yet to take her oath as a member of the Legislative Council. Her entry follows a Supreme Court ruling upholding her victory in the Chikkamagaluru Local Authorities' constituency after a petition challenged the election of M.K. Pranaesh, confirming that nominated members do not hold voting power.
The new ministers represent a diverse cross-section of Karnataka's communities, including P.M. Narendraswamy (Dalit Right), Rizwan Arshad (Muslim), Dr. Ajay Singh (OBC), T Raghumurthy (ST), H.C. Balakrishna (Vokkaliga), K.S. Basavanthappa (Dalit Left), K.M. Shivalinge Gowda (Vokkaliga), Vijayanand Kashappanavar (Panchamshali Lingayat), and Rudrappa Lamani (Banjara, SC).
However, the cabinet expansion isn't without its controversies. B. Nagendra (ST), who resigned from Siddaramaiah’s previous cabinet after his name surfaced in a multi-crore Valmiki development corporation scam, has been re-inducted. This decision is likely to spark debate and scrutiny from opposition parties and the public alike.
