Nepal Mourns Flash Flood Victims: Over 1,300 Dead, Thousands Still Missing

Nepal observed a solemn national day of mourning on Monday, September 7, 2026, for the victims of a catastrophic flash flood that swept through a Himalayan valley almost two weeks prior. Flags across the nation, and even at Nepalese missions abroad, flew at half-mast to mark the final day of the traditional 13-day Hindu mourning period. The devastating flood, believed to have been triggered by a glacial collapse along the Nepal-Tibet border, has claimed at least 1,355 lives. The human toll continues to mount, with a staggering 4,996 people still reported missing, including an estimated 589 foreign nationals. While 13,396 individuals have been rescued so far, the ongoing search efforts are a grim race against time in the disaster-hit areas.

President Ram Chandra Paudel toured the devastated regions on Monday, witnessing firsthand the scale of the destruction.

Despite the national day of mourning, official government programs were scaled back, prioritizing the relentless search and rescue operations.

Phanindra Paudel of the National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) confirmed this focus, stating,

there would be no government programmes organised as the rescue and search operation is still going on in the flood-hit areas.

Army spokesperson Raja Ram Basnet reported that rescue efforts are "intensifying," particularly within hydropower tunnels where hopes for finding survivors remain. Ground and air operations are also continuing, with teams ensuring no one is left stranded.

One poignant moment amidst the tragedy was the rescue of a 64-year-old Nepali woman found alive in her mud-buried home, offering a glimmer of hope in the face of overwhelming loss.
