A tourist helicopter crash in central Kenya on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, tragically killed all seven people on board, including Ecuador’s intelligence chief and five U.S. citizens.
The accident occurred in Samburu County, north of the capital Nairobi, after the aircraft had departed from the Loisaba wildlife reserve. Emergency response teams from the Kenya Red Cross shared photos on X (formerly Twitter) depicting a crash site engulfed in flames, indicating the severity of the incident. Rescue operations were significantly hampered by the difficult terrain and were suspended until the following day due to darkness, according to Samburu County police chief David Nkoroi.
Ecuador’s Transport Minister Roberto Luque confirmed that Michele Sensi-Contugi, the country's intelligence chief, and his wife, Stephany Hollihan, were among the deceased. Luque expressed his condolences on X, mourning the premature loss of the couple. Sensi-Contugi, 42, a former businessman, was appointed head of Ecuador’s National Intelligence Center in 2024 and was a close associate of Ecuador’s right-wing President Daniel Noboa. His work was significant in establishing Ecuador as a key U.S. partner in Washington’s efforts against drug cartels.
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) reported that there were seven people on board, one pilot and six passengers. Fredrick Kabunge, director of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Department (AAID), confirmed that there were no survivors. A U.S. State Department spokesperson also confirmed the deaths of five American citizens in the crash, though their identities were not immediately released. This incident marks a somber moment for both Ecuador and the United States, as investigations into the cause of the crash are expected to begin.
