When crises hit, students suffer the most. With recent exam cancellations due to conflicts in West Asia, it is clear we need a fairer system. Is continuous assessment the ultimate fix for our fragile education setup?
Imagine spending an entire year studying for the most important test of your life, only to have it cancelled because of an escalating international conflict. For many students sitting for their Class 12 board exams in seven West Asian countries, this nightmare just became a reality. Caught in the tensions surrounding the US, Israel, and Iran, these teenagers are now left in academic limbo.
It breaks my heart to see young futures stalled by geopolitical chaos. But this situation raises a massive, glaring question about how we evaluate students. Are we heavily relying on a flawed system?
The Problem with the Grand Finale
For decades, our education systems have worshipped the almighty final exam. It is a do or die moment. You either perform on that specific Tuesday morning, or your academic record takes a hit. But life is rarely that predictable. Whether it is a global pandemic, a sudden health issue, or an erupting war, a million things can derail a student on exam day.
Putting all our educational eggs in one basket is not just risky. It lacks basic empathy.
Enter Continuous Assessment
It is time we have a serious conversation about continuous assessment. Instead of judging a student on a three-hour anxiety fest, why not evaluate them on their progress throughout the year? Here is why a steady evaluation model is miles ahead:
- It is Fairer: It measures actual learning over time, rather than how well someone can memorize and regurgitate facts under extreme pressure.
- It is Adaptable: If a crisis strikes in March, a student evaluated continuously already has a robust portfolio of grades from September to February. Nobody is left scrambling.
- It is Humane: High-stakes testing creates unprecedented mental health crises among teens. Knowing that every project, quiz, and assignment counts helps distribute that weight.
Time for a System Update
We cannot control global conflicts or natural disasters. However, we can completely control how we treat our youth when the world turns upside down. Sticking to a rigid, outdated testing model while students literally dodge geopolitical fallout is absurd.
