A federal judge in Boston has dismissed a significant lawsuit brought by the Trump administration against Harvard University, which alleged the institution failed to address antisemitism adequately on campus. U.S. District Judge Richard G. Stearns ruled on Thursday that the administration did not provide sufficient evidence of a continuous breach of federal civil rights statutes.
The lawsuit claimed Harvard ignored the harassment of Jewish students during pro-Palestinian protests following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks on Israel. Federal officials argued that university leaders remained passive while Jewish students reportedly faced harassment, physical assaults, stalking, and even spitting incidents.
However, Judge Stearns found the cited events, largely from the 2023-24 school year, to be "too isolated and episodic" to demonstrate an ongoing civil rights infraction at the Ivy League campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This ruling marks a major win for Harvard.
Harvard had previously stated its deep commitment to its Jewish and Israeli community, ensuring their well-being and ability to thrive. Harvard President Alan M. Garber had also highlighted proactive measures taken by the university, including forming an antisemitism task force, appointing new leadership, and reforming disciplinary procedures to be more consistent and effective.
The Trump administration's lawsuit had aimed to reclaim billions in research grant money disbursed to Harvard since October 2023, citing Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin in programs receiving federal financial assistance. Following the judgment, Harmeet Dhillon, assistant attorney general for civil rights at the Department of Justice, indicated they "disagree with the ruling and are assessing next steps." Harvard has not yet issued a statement regarding the judgment.
