Delhi HC orders police to fast-track protection for ex-DUSU president Ronak Khatri
Delhi High Court directs cops to speed up protection for Ronak Khatri after life-threatening messages from a Ukraine-registered phone number, linked to a gang.
In a brief but consequential order, the Delhi High Court directed the Delhi Police to expedite the protection request filed by former Delhi University Students’ Union president Ronak Khatri, who says he has received life-threatening messages.
Khatri claims a Ukraine-registered number sent messages from someone claiming links to the Rohit Godara gang, demanding ₹5 crore and warning of death if payment is not made. The court reminded authorities that protecting life is the state’s duty and asked the DCP (Outer North) and DCP (Special Cell) to accelerate the threat assessment and potential protection.
The bench also instructed the beat constable and the Station House Officer to respond immediately to any call from Khatri, and noted that police had previously offered limited protection, which was withdrawn on Sept 30. Khatri has since pressed repeatedly for ongoing security for himself and his family while the police review the threat.
Khatri is the DUSU president for 2024-25; authorities will determine if continuous protection is warranted. The court's directive aims to ensure timely protection while the threat is assessed.
