Europe Scorched! France Curbs Alcohol, Shuts Schools Amid Record Heatwave
A scorching heatwave grips Europe, with France taking drastic measures like closing schools and restricting alcohol. Learn how countries are battling record-breaking temperatures and facing a crisis comparable to 2003.
Europe is currently enduring one of its worst June heatwaves on record, with 26 countries, from Ireland to Greece, issuing heat alerts. France, in particular, has been severely affected, placing large parts of the country under its highest heat alert as temperatures soared above 40°C in several areas.
In response to the extreme conditions, France has implemented several critical measures. Authorities restricted alcohol at state-organised public events, a decision made during the Fête de la musique, an annual celebration that draws millions. The Prime Minister's office stated that instructions were given "not to offer alcohol" for all state-organized events. More than 800 schools were ordered to close, and people were urged to avoid unnecessary outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day.
The heatwave's intensity is alarming, with temperatures expected to rise above 41°C in some places. Météo-France, the national meteorological service, warned that the country could remain on a "very high plateau" of temperatures for several days. Of particular concern is the comparison to the devastating 2003 heatwave, which lasted 16 days and tragically claimed nearly 15,000 lives in France. Météo-France stated that the current heatwave is expected to be "quite comparable in severity" and could even "surpass it in terms of maximum intensity."
Beyond France, other European nations are also grappling with the extreme heat. Spain closed a World Cup fan zone in Madrid, while the United Kingdom prepared for temperatures that could potentially break its all-time June record. Several locations across Europe have already recorded their highest-ever June temperatures during this spell.
The cause of these extreme temperatures is attributed to a heat dome positioned over Europe, marking the second such occurrence in two months. This phenomenon traps hot air, leading to prolonged periods of intense heat. Cities are exploring strategies like "heatwave mode," similar to initiatives in Paris, which include opening parks 24 hours and implementing alcohol bans, learning from past experiences like the 2003 disaster.
