In a significant development in the high-profile Abhimanyu murder case, the Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court in Kerala has mandated all 16 accused to appear before it on August 10. On this date, an additional charge of voluntarily causing hurt (under Section 323 of the Indian Penal Code) will be formally read out against them, as invoked by the prosecution.
Principal Sessions Judge K.K. Balakrishnan expressed clear dissatisfaction over the absence of the accused during proceedings on Thursday, August 6, 2026. This stern stance comes amidst a directive from the Kerala High Court, which has urged the trial court to conclude this complex case within a strict four-month timeframe. The High Court's push for a speedy trial stems from a petition filed by Abhimanyu’s mother, Bhoopathy, who highlighted previous extensions to the trial deadline, including an initial nine-month directive on January 24, 2025, later extended by three months on October 31, 2025.
The 16 individuals currently facing trial had all pleaded not guilty when the initial charges were read out to them on July 6, 2026. They are facing severe charges including murder, causing hurt with dangerous weapons, criminal intimidation, destruction of evidence, rioting, and unlawful assembly. In earlier proceedings, the court had dismissed petitions from six of the accused seeking discharge, ruling that there was sufficient evidence to proceed with the trial. A plea from the first accused to have the chargesheet returned was also rejected, and the High Court previously dismissed a request to keep the trial in abeyance.
Abhimanyu, who was a second-year B.Sc. Chemistry student and the SFI unit secretary at Maharaja’s College, was tragically murdered, sparking widespread outrage. The ongoing legal battle seeks to bring justice in a case that has garnered significant public and judicial attention, with the latest court order emphasizing the urgency to move forward.
