Assam-Arunachal Border Erupts: Police Fire Shots, CM Calls for Calm!

Fresh clashes have erupted along the disputed border between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, prompting police to fire warning shots into the air to disperse an agitated mob. The latest confrontation occurred on Thursday in Assam's Dhemaji district, escalating tensions that have been simmering in the region.

This renewed unrest follows a previous incident on Monday where eighteen Assamese villagers were reportedly injured amidst accusations of land encroachment. The current flare-up comes against the backdrop of an ongoing economic blockade targeting Itanagar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, initiated by protestors from Assam.

Authorities confirmed that police resorted to firing to control the situation as protesters blocked key entry points along the inter-state border. Roads at Dwarmukh-Banderdewa, Ruksin, Silapathar in Dhemaji, Banderdewa in Lakhimpur, Solengi in Gohpur, and Pabhoi in Biswanath were among those affected by the agitation. Stones were also reportedly thrown at protesters at the Likabali entry point in Assam.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has urgently called for peace and calm, emphasizing the need for dialogue to resolve the long-standing border dispute. Officials from both states are now working diligently to ease tensions and restore normalcy in the affected areas. The situation remains tense as efforts continue to de-escalate the conflict and ensure the safety of residents.
