Police register case against ABVP after about 25 activists stormed Azim Premji University, injuring security staff and a student; investigations underway.
Bengaluru police have registered a case against ABVP members under relevant sections pertaining to unlawful assembly, trespass, assault, criminal intimidation, and property damage a day after around 25 activists allegedly barged into Azim Premji University, created a ruckus on campus, and assaulted security personnel and a student. According to the complaint filed by S. Wilson, Security Manager of the university, the group gathered unlawfully and forcibly entered the premises. When security staff attempted to stop them, the activists allegedly attacked them, abused them verbally, and issued life threats. In the incident, six security guards and one student sustained injuries, and the group also damaged the university’s name board and other property before leaving the campus. Investigations are underway to ascertain how the protest was organized, and whether others were involved in instigating or supporting the incident.
Security staff were on the front line as the group confronted guards and students; when security tried to intervene, the activists allegedly attacked, verbally abused, and threatened staff. The university has termed the disruption as unacceptable and reiterated that safety on campus must be preserved while upholding the right to peaceful protest.
The university later condemned the violence, saying such acts by external groups have no place on campus. Separately, authorities took around 25 activists into preventive custody as part of their response, noting that no authorized event had been held on campus that day. A report linked to protests surrounding a Kashmir-related discussion noted that police detained participants, with the university stressing that no such event had been scheduled or held. The incident has raised questions about campus security and how protests are organized near or inside university premises.
