Orkla India muted market debut as MTR Foods parent lists at premium
Orkla India's IPO debut shows a modest listing with premiums on both BSE and NSE, after raising Rs 1,667 crore via an OFS and delivering mixed retail, HNI gains.
Orkla India began trading on Thursday with a muted response, listing at Rs 751.50 on BSE and Rs 750.10 on NSE, both premiums to the issue price of Rs 730. The listing price reflected a premium of about 2.95% on BSE and 2.75% on NSE, signaling a cautious start for investors.
The IPO was entirely an offer-for-sale of up to 2,28,43,004 equity shares, raising Rs 1,667.52 crore in total. The offer was open for bids between October 29 and October 31, with a price band of Rs 695-730 per share and a lot size of 20 shares. The issue was subscribed 48.73 times overall, with strong demand from qualified institutional buyers (117.63 times), NIIs (54.42 times), while retail and employees were booked 7.05 times.
Prior to listing, grey-market activity suggested a listing gain of 9-10%, with GMP hovering at Rs 65-70 per share. After the IPO concluded, GMP was reported around Rs 95-100, though actual listing gains materialized as modest positives for some investors. Retail investors who held one lot of 20 shares could have seen a mild profit of about Rs 430, while high-net-worth investors who received 14 lots (280 shares) reportedly realized a profit of around Rs 6,020.
From a market perspective, the listing has been described as below expectations, with the stock trading in line with a cautious mood in a broader market environment. Orkla India, the parent company of MTR Foods, saw investor interest tied to its established brands, even as turnout at listing remained restrained. The outcome highlights ongoing investor appetite for fresh listings tempered by market volatility and valuation concerns.
In summary, Orkla India’s stock market debut delivered a tempered start, with a premium on day one but no explosive gains, reflecting a carefully watched phase for new listings in a changing market landscape.
