Is Miranda Priestly Actually the Hero? Rewatching The Devil Wears Prada in 2024
Is Miranda Priestly Actually the Hero? Rewatching The Devil Wears Prada in 2024
We used to pity Andy Sachs, but now we are questioning everything. Was Andy the real villain, and is it time to finally give Miranda Priestly her flowers?
The Cerulean Truth
When The Devil Wears Prada first hit theaters in 2006, the narrative felt simple. Miranda Priestly was the icy antagonist and Andy Sachs was the relatable underdog just trying to survive a toxic workplace. We cheered when Andy finally threw her phone into that fountain in Paris, effectively quitting her high-stress life. But rewatching it today? The vibes are completely different. Our collective perspective on work, ambition, and success has shifted so much that the hero-villain dynamic has practically flipped.
Why Andy Sachs Is Canceled
Let us be honest about Andy. She walked into one of the most prestigious fashion magazines in the world with a massive chip on her shoulder. She mocked the industry that paid her bills and rolled her eyes at the very people she was supposed to assist. While millions of people would literally kill for that desk, Andy spent the first half of the movie complaining that her boss expected her to actually do her job.
In 2024, we see Andy's attitude not as quirky or grounded, but as entitled. She wanted the perks of the elite world without putting in the respect for the craft. And do not even get me started on her friends. Nate and the gang were the definition of unsupportive. They mocked her career growth and made her feel guilty for being good at a demanding role. In today's world, we recognize that your friends should not hold you back from your potential just because you are busy for a few months.
The Miranda Priestly Defense
Now, let us talk about Miranda. Yes, she was demanding. Yes, the coat-tossing was a bit much. But she was a woman at the pinnacle of a multi-billion dollar industry. She did not have the luxury of being soft because excellence does not happen by accident.
Miranda was a perfectionist who expected the best from everyone around her. She actually saw potential in Andy that Andy did not even see in herself. In a professional landscape that often penalizes ambitious women, Miranda Priestly was simply playing the game to win. Is she a girlboss? Maybe. Is she a visionary who paved the way for others? Absolutely.
The New Lesson
The real takeaway today is not that fashion is shallow or that bosses are monsters. It is about the cost of ambition and the reality of professional evolution. We are finally ready to admit that Andy was often her own worst enemy, and Miranda was just the only one in the room who knew exactly what it took to stay on top.
