Stock Market Holiday: NSE and BSE Closed Today for Bakri Id
Indian stock markets are closed today for Bakri Id. Check out the latest Sensex and Nifty performance and what to expect when trading resumes.
The Indian stock markets are taking a breather today. Both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) remain shut this Thursday in observance of Bakri Id. This marks the second market holiday for the month, following the break for Maharashtra Day on May 1.
If you were planning to trade in equities, derivatives, or even electronic gold receipts, you will have to wait until the markets reopen. According to the exchanges, trading remains suspended across equity derivatives, currency derivatives, commodity derivatives, and electronic gold segments for the duration of the holiday.
This pause comes after a slightly bumpy session on Wednesday. The Sensex ended the day down by about 142 points, closing at 75,867.80. Similarly, the Nifty slipped slightly, managing to hold its ground at the 23,907 mark. Major players like HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries, and ICICI Bank were among those putting downward pressure on the indices, with HDFC Bank notably dropping around 3%.
While the main indices showed some weakness, the broader market actually displayed some resilience, ending the previous session in the green. Analysts have noted that market volatility, often measured by the India VIX, has dropped significantly this week. This suggests that the initial anxiety among investors might be cooling down, even if it hasn't fully reflected in the benchmark movements yet.
Looking ahead, the Sensex is facing some tough resistance near the 76,200 to 76,400 zone. Experts suggest that a fresh rally is likely only if the market can decisively break past these levels. On the flip side, there is solid support sitting around the 75,000 mark. Global factors are also at play, with ongoing tensions between Iran and the US and a slight decline in the rupee keeping sentiment cautious.
For now, traders can enjoy the midweek break before the markets resume action for the final session of the week.
