Executive producer Stephen Lambert revealed that the idea for a stage adaptation had been "brewing" since the series' initial success. He noted the show's inherent "theatricality," complete with cloaks and burning flames, making it a natural fit for the stage. The primary challenge, Lambert explained, was to identify what a live production could uniquely bring to the audience beyond the television format.

Lambert highlighted that while each play is "satisfying in its own right," the collection of five offers audiences a "very rounded experience of learning about these fictional characters in a way that’s quite unlike anything I’ve ever seen in the theatre."
