The inaugural Vande Bharat Sleeper on the Guwahati-Kolkata route promises affordable long-distance travel with fares starting around ₹2,300 for 3AC and top-speed trials at 180 kmph.
The Railway Ministry has announced the rollout of the first Vande Bharat Sleeper train on the Guwahati–Howrah route, with PM Modi slated to flag off the service in the coming days. This marks a significant step in the national push toward faster, safer, and more affordable rail travel. Vaishnaw highlighted the fare structure: approximately ₹2,300 for 3AC, around ₹3,000 for 2AC, and about ₹3,600 for 1AC. He contrasted these prices with airfares on the same route, which typically range from ₹6,000 to ₹10,000, underscoring the sleeper option as a practical alternative for travelers.
Tests have already demonstrated the sleeper train’s potential, with the 16-coach rake achieving a top speed of 180 kmph during high-speed trials on the Kota–Nagda section. The trials assessed braking, ride stability, vibration, safety systems, and emergency response, all of which were reported satisfactory by the testing authority. The rake comprises 11 AC 3-tier coaches, 4 AC 2-tier coaches, and a single AC 1st coach, with a total capacity of 823 passengers.
Inside, passengers will find a modern long-distance travel setup, featuring comfortable berths, automatic doors, modern toilets, CCTV surveillance, digital information displays, and energy-efficient technologies. Safety features include the KAVACH system, crashworthy couplers, enhanced fire protection, emergency communication units, and dedicated facilities for Divyangjan passengers. These elements reflect a broader push toward indigenous manufacturing and safety in line with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
Railways officials indicate that around 12 Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are expected to be inducted into the network by the end of this year, with further expansion planned for the next year. The first sleeper service between Guwahati and Howrah will be a landmark in expanding high-speed, comfortable, and affordable rail connectivity across the region. The project aligns with both regional development and national strategic goals, signaling enhanced mobility for travelers in the northeast and eastern corridors while showcasing homegrown railway technology.
As the launch approaches, officials and commuters will be watching closely to see how the sleeper service performs in terms of punctuality, on-board experience, and overall value compared to existing long-distance options. If the early trials and fare structure are any indication, the Guwahati–Howrah Sleeper may become a popular choice for travelers seeking a balance of speed, comfort, and cost.
