Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda recently unveiled a significant paper titled "AI in MedTech: Revolutionising Healthcare Through Artificial Intelligence" at the ninth edition of India Medical Device 2026 in New Delhi. This comprehensive report, jointly developed by Praxis Global Alliance and FICCI, highlights that while India has built a strong foundation for AI in healthcare, several critical barriers are hindering its widespread scaling.
The report identifies MedTech as India's "most immediate and scalable opportunity" for AI adoption. Medical devices, operating at the point of care, generate invaluable clinical data. Integrating AI can significantly enhance diagnosis, improve clinical decision-making, and streamline workflow efficiency. This is particularly crucial for India, a nation grappling with a shortage of both medical devices and specialist expertise. By embedding AI directly into devices, high-quality screening and decision-making can reach patients closer to home, without necessitating a proportional expansion of physical healthcare infrastructure. AI-enabled diagnostics are anticipated to be the first major application to achieve scale, relying on structured data, standardized workflows, and measurable clinical outcomes.
Despite rapid technological advancements and increasing acceptance among medical professionals, only a handful of AI-enabled MedTech solutions have successfully transitioned from pilot projects to broader clinical deployment. The report pinpoints three major barriers impeding this critical scale-up. Firstly, fragmented health data, limited interoperability, and insufficient real-world evidence make clinical validation, regulatory approval, and post-market monitoring challenging. Secondly, the evolving regulatory landscape poses difficulties. Lastly, inadequate reimbursement and procurement mechanisms further complicate the wider adoption of these innovative solutions. Addressing these challenges is paramount to unlock the full potential of AI in transforming India's healthcare landscape.
