The UK is sweltering under an exceptional heatwave, with a provisional temperature of 37.3C recorded in Santon Downham, Suffolk. This marks a new record UK high for June, surpassing the 37.1C set earlier the same day in Cavendish, Suffolk. These figures have significantly broken the long-standing June heat record from 1976 by over 1C, a substantial increase compared to typical fractional record breaks.
Forecasters predict London could reach highs of 36C and Manchester 35C on Friday, while Belfast and Cardiff are expected to see around 26C. Much of the UK remains under a red warning for extreme heat. Andy Page, a Met Office chief meteorologist, stated that this "exceptional spell of hot and humid weather will maintain its grip on the UK for a little longer," even as some red warnings are set to expire. He anticipates some daytime maximum temperatures could exceed 36C, potentially reaching 37C in certain areas.
Prof Stephen Belcher CBE, Met Office chief scientist, emphasized the gravity of the situation, calling it a "significant weather event" and directly linking it to "human induced climate change," which he says has made such events more likely and intense. He highlighted the "sobering" implications of seeing these temperatures in June, warning of significant health risks from heat stress, as well as impacts on transport, energy, and water supplies.
Across the channel, Europe is also grappling with the severe conditions. France has reported 55 drownings, with many occurring in unauthorized swimming locations. In Paris, authorities are implementing a ban on public alcohol consumption as hospitals reach a "saturation point" due to heat-related incidents, underscoring the widespread challenges posed by the relentless heatwave.
