Bengaluru continues to dominate India’s artificial intelligence (AI) talent landscape, accounting for a significant 19% of AI learners across the country, according to the recent India AI Workforce Report 2026 by Scaler. The report highlights Bengaluru's leadership, followed by Pune, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Chennai, solidifying their positions as India’s top five AI talent hubs.
However, a more transformative shift is underway: India’s AI skilling narrative is expanding far beyond its traditional technology centers. The report indicates that nearly one in five AI learners now hail from Tier-II cities such as Lucknow, Jaipur, Patna, Indore, Coimbatore, and Nagpur. This signals a remarkable spread of AI learning, demonstrating the growing "democratisation of AI talent across India" beyond just metro markets.
These findings arrive at a pivotal moment when AI is transitioning from an experimental phase to mainstream adoption in the workplace. Scaler's analysis underscores that AI is no longer the exclusive domain of software engineers or dedicated technology teams. Professionals across diverse industries are now leveraging AI to boost productivity, ascend into higher-value roles, and accelerate their career trajectories.
The report also details a broadening scope of AI-enabled career outcomes. More than 50% of these outcomes now lie outside traditional engineering roles, extending into areas like leadership, consulting, human resources, marketing, finance, and academia, among other business functions. Furthermore, a substantial 25% of learners come from non-technical fields, emphasizing that AI is evolving into a broad workforce capability rather than remaining a niche technical skill.
While Software Engineer remains the most common AI career outcome at 34.77%, Engineering Leadership follows at 17.51%. Consulting has also seen a significant uptick, with outcomes nearly doubling from 3.1% of learners at entry to 5.65% of overall professional outcomes. This evolution points to India's vast potential, fueled by its large technology talent pool, thriving digital ecosystem, and an ambitious young workforce eager to learn and adapt, with real transformation taking root in Tier II cities and across various professional functions.
