Season 35 of Dancing with the Stars officially launched, but not without some unexpected ballroom drama. Co-host Julianne Hough swiftly informed viewers that ABC's online voting system was experiencing technical difficulties.
Later, co-host Alfonso Ribeiro confirmed that all online votes for the night would be discarded.
Despite this significant glitch, the show pressed on with its scheduled elimination. The first couple to leave the competition was The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star Conner Leavitt and his new professional partner, Adele Zaikman. Their departure followed a low score from the judges and an insufficient number of viewer votes, particularly impacted by the voting outage.
The first night of the two-night premiere saw the male celebrities and their pro partners performing their initial routines. While scores were generally on the lower side, returning judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Derek Hough, and Bruno Tonioli offered mostly encouraging feedback. Paralympian Ezra Frech, partnered with Daniella Karagach, delivered a standout tango to Kelly Clarkson's “Since U Been Gone,” earning a respectable 20 out of 30.
However, it was Grey's Anatomy star Harry Shum Jr. and Jenna Johnson who topped the leaderboard with 21 out of 30 for their performance. This season features a diverse cast, including Bravo personality Ciara Miller, actress Jenna Dewan, 10 Things I Hate About You star Julia Stiles, Olympic figure skater Amber Glenn, and Savannah Bananas player Jackson Olson.
The reality competition will continue its premiere tonight, Wednesday, for the female stars' performances, with another elimination expected. Streaming is available the following day on Hulu.
The two-part premiere is designed for couples to perform on one of the two nights.
Two couples will ultimately be eliminated from this opening week, one from each night's competition. Adding to the show's evolving dynamics, Hailey Bills has been promoted to a pro dancer this season, partnering with Nader. This duo marks the season's only all-female same-sex celebrity-pro pairing, and the third such pairing in the show's history, following JoJo Siwa and Jenna Johnson in Season 30.
The voting process for DWTS Season 35 largely mirrors previous seasons, allowing fans to vote online or via SMS during the live broadcast window. Viewers can cast up to 20 votes per couple (10 online and 10 via text message), but only during the designated live voting period.
