A devastating ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing facility in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district has tragically claimed five lives, with 67 individuals currently receiving medical treatment. The incident, which occurred on June 21 during routine operations at the industrial unit, exposed workers to the toxic gas, leading to a grim toll.
The death count rose steadily, with two fatalities reported on the evening of June 21, and three more confirmed by the morning of June 22, bringing the total to five. In all, 74 individuals were affected by the leak. Two individuals who received initial medical care have since been discharged, while the majority remain under medical observation. Those affected displayed symptoms typical of ammonia inhalation, including breathlessness, irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract, coughing, chest discomfort, and varying degrees of respiratory distress.
Emergency response teams, including district administration officials, police personnel, fire and rescue services, and public health authorities, were swiftly deployed to the site. Their immediate action focused on managing the situation and providing critical medical assistance to the victims.
The exact cause of the gas leak is currently under investigation by competent authorities. In response to the tragedy, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has ordered the formation of a three-member committee to thoroughly probe the incident and ascertain accountability. Notably, the proprietor of the company and the factory manager have been arrested. Police reports indicate that these individuals faced pending cases for previous violations of industrial safety norms, raising serious questions about the factory's adherence to safety regulations.
The incident has also drawn attention from political circles, with DMK and Communist Party MLAs urging swift and decisive action. This tragic event underscores the critical importance of stringent safety protocols and vigilant enforcement in industrial settings to prevent such devastating accidents in the future.
