A significant development has unfolded in Srinagar, with J&K Police filing an FIR against Iltija Mufti, daughter of former Chief Minister and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti. She stands accused of assaulting a police officer during a protest against the abrogation of Article 370 on Tuesday.
Police allege that Iltija assaulted an officer while he was performing his duties, specifically claiming she bit his forearm, causing it to bleed. The charges against her include sections 121, 132, and 191 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertain to assaulting public servants and rioting. Her mother, Mehbooba Mufti, has also been named for allegedly violating protest restrictions.
However, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vehemently denied these accusations, stating that Iltija was manhandled and injured by the police. According to Arif Amin, a PDP functionary, Iltija was attempting to peacefully reach Lal Chowk to register her protest when police intervened. He described her being dragged for nearly half an hour while others were kept away and pushed back by officers.
The PDP also raised serious concerns after police reached Mehbooba Mufti's home in Khimber and questioned Iltija while she was reportedly under medical treatment for her injuries. A PDP spokesperson, Mohit Bhan, labeled the FIR a "blatant misuse of power and authority," urging authorities to respect her medical condition and ensure due process is followed with dignity and humanity. This incident highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding political protests in the region.
