India, Australia and Canada launch trilateral tech and innovation partnership
Three democracies announce ACITI to boost emerging tech, clean energy, and AI, aiming for resilient supply chains and net-zero goals.
Johannesburg — Leaders from India, Australia, and Canada unveiled a new trilateral technology and innovation partnership, the Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership, on the sidelines of the G20 Summit. The move signals a concerted effort to deepen cooperation in emerging technologies, green energy, and the building of resilient supply chains across three continents and three oceans. The partnership is designed to draw on each country’s strengths to accelerate innovation, diversify supply chains, and push forward mass adoption of AI while advancing green energy initiatives.
In a joint statement, the three sides said ACITI will focus on critical and emerging technologies, complement existing bilateral efforts, and emphasize green energy innovation and secure supply chains, including minerals critical to modern technologies. Officials noted that the initiative will be weighted toward practical outcomes, with a first concrete step being a formal convening of officials in the first quarter of 2026 to delineate workstreams and milestones.
The plan also envisions collaborative work on AI to improve the lives of citizens and to explore scalable deployment of AI applications, alongside investment in clean energy technologies—such as renewables, energy storage, and smart grids. By pursuing diversified supply chains and regional manufacturing capabilities, the partners aim to reduce dependence on a single source and increase resilience in global markets.
The leaders highlighted that ACITI seeks to leverage democratic values and shared priorities to spur innovation while delivering tangible benefits, including faster access to new technologies and stronger energy security. The partnership is presented as a template for technology diplomacy among like-minded nations, with governance and accountability mechanisms designed to ensure progress toward stated goals and transparent reporting.
As the global economy continues to grapple with supply-chain disruptions and rapid technological change, ACITI represents a strategic step toward coordinated action in technology, energy, and economic resilience that could influence future trilateral and multilateral collaborations.
