Jammu and Kashmir is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of thousands of pilgrims, as authorities announced the temporary suspension of the annual Shri Amarnathji Yatra and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra. The suspension, effective from July 19, 2026, comes in response to an inclement weather forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Kashmir Divisional Commissioner Anshul Garg stated that the Amarnath Yatra would be halted from both the Pahalgam and Baltal routes. This decision is purely a precautionary measure to safeguard the well-being of pilgrims undertaking the arduous journey to the holy cave shrine. Similarly, an official spokesperson in Jammu confirmed the suspension of the Vaishno Devi Yatra, emphasizing public safety amidst the anticipated unfavorable weather conditions.
The IMD has predicted moderate to widespread rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir from July 19 to July 23, raising concerns about potential landslides and flash floods in vulnerable areas. As a result, no onward movement will be permitted from the Baltal and Nunwan/Chandanwari base camps for Amarnath pilgrims in Kashmir. Furthermore, no pilgrim convoys will be allowed to proceed from Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu.
Pilgrims are strongly advised to cooperate with the authorities and postpone their pilgrimage until further orders. Officials have urged devotees to stay updated through official communication channels regarding the resumption of both Yatras. Updates will be issued only after route safety is thoroughly assessed and weather conditions are deemed suitable for travel.
This year, the Amarnath Yatra has already seen a significant turnout, with over 3.76 lakh pilgrims having paid obeisance at the holy cave shrine prior to the suspension. The proactive decision underscores the administration's commitment to prioritizing the lives of devotees above all else, especially given the challenging terrains involved in both pilgrimages. In related news, school holidays in Kashmir have also been extended by three days due to the adverse weather, further highlighting the seriousness of the forecast.
