Rahman to credit Dagar brothers in Ponniyin Selvan II after Supreme Court nudging
A.R. Rahman agrees to credit the Junior Dagar Brothers in Veera Raja Veera after a Supreme Court nudge, citing the Dagarwani Dhrupad lineage.
The Supreme Court nudged A.R. Rahman and the makers of Ponniyin Selvan II to acknowledge the contribution of the Junior Dagar brothers in the film’s music credits. Rahman agreed to add a line in the credit roll for Veera Raja Veera that reads: “Composition inspired from the Dagarwani tradition Dhrupad, first recorded as Shiv Stuti by late Ustad Nasir Faiyazuddin Dagar and Ustad Nasir Zahiruddin Dagar, popularly known as Junior Dagar brothers.”
Appearing before a bench, the senior advocate for Rahman and the film group conveyed consent to the addition. The court had earlier urged such acknowledgement in the larger interest of music, even though the film already noted the influence of the Dagarvani tradition in the song’s credits.
The modification in the credits is expected to reflect within four to five weeks, the court said. The judge clarified that this change pertains only to the credits and would not prejudice the ongoing copyright infringement case filed by Ustad Faiyaz Wasifuddin Dagar, the successor of the Dagar brothers. All legal options remain open.
In parallel developments, Delhi High Court had stayed an interim order against Rahman in a related song copyright matter, underscoring the continuing legal discussions surrounding music rights and acknowledgment in Indian cinema.
