The Met Office has extended its yellow thunderstorm warnings across a significant portion of England and Wales, forecasting continued heavy downpours throughout Thursday and into the early hours of Friday. This comes with a heightened risk of flash flooding and travel disruption, even as the country grapples with an ongoing drought.

Areas particularly affected include the Midlands, with cities like Birmingham and Staffordshire experiencing "significant flooding." Up to 75mm (3in) of rain is possible in some localized spots, accompanied by large hail, lightning, and strong gusts of wind. In the broader warning area, 20-30mm (0.8-1.2in) could fall in just a few hours, with some places potentially seeing up to 50mm (2in) over 12 hours.

Londoners also faced severe thundery showers, impacting morning commutes.

Despite the intense rainfall, experts caution that the overall drought situation remains serious.

The National Drought Group highlighted that this week's wet weather is the first substantial rain many areas have seen since June. While welcome, it's not enough to fully alleviate the long-term water shortages.

The contrast between flash floods and persistent drought underscores the complex challenges of climate change.

Travel disruption is highly anticipated, with hazardous driving conditions expected, potential road closures, and communities facing the risk of being cut off. Lightning strikes could lead to power outages, and hailstones measuring 1-2cm (0.4-0.8in) are also a possibility. While some rain is expected in Northern Ireland and Scotland, these regions are likely to escape the most severe conditions seen further south.

Residents are advised to stay updated with Met Office forecasts, prepare for potential disruptions, and exercise extreme caution when travelling.

Even with the heavy rain, conserving water remains vital as the UK navigates this period of extreme weather variability.
