Cyclone Montha Poised to Cross Kakinada Coast; Alerts Across States

A powerful cyclone, Montha, is gathering strength over the Bay of Bengal and is forecast to bring 90-100 km/h winds as it moves toward the east coast. The India Meteorological Department expects the system to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast around the Machilipatnam–Kalingapatnam belt on the evening or night of October 28, with maximum sustained winds potentially reaching 110 km/h at peak. Coastal authorities have activated disaster plans and issued warnings to residents and fishers.

Odisha is also bracing for heavy rainfall from October 27 to 29, with red warnings for certain southern and coastal districts and a yellow alert issued for the rest of the state. Squally winds along the south Odisha coast are forecast, with gusts up to 60 km/h. Health, water resources, energy and disaster-management teams are on standby, and preparations include evacuation-ready relief centers and essential supplies to be deployed if needed.

In Telangana, heavy rainfall is anticipated from October 27 to 29, with the southern and eastern districts expected to bear the brunt. Hyderabad may see light to moderate showers, while the overall rainfall activity is likely to continue through October 29 before tapering. Meteorologists caution that the system could intensify from a depression to a cyclonic storm as it moves west-northwest, then north-northwest, toward the coast.

Residents are urged to stay indoors during strong gusts, secure loose items near beaches, and avoid coastal and fishing activities until conditions improve. Disaster-management teams across states are coordinating with local administrations to ensure relief centers and emergency supplies are ready, and ports are monitoring conditions for any advisories.
