A future Conservative government is pledging to “do whatever it takes” to deliver a third runway at Heathrow Airport. Shadow Chancellor Andrew Griffith is set to announce this bold commitment at the Conservative party conference in Birmingham, emphasizing an “all in” approach to growth and vowing to legislate against anything blocking the infrastructure the country needs.
This strong declaration comes in contrast to the Labour party's more cautious stance.
Last week, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander indicated at the Labour conference in Liverpool that Prime Minister Andy Burnham is maintaining an “open mind” regarding expansion at the UK's busiest airport.
Mr. Burnham himself suggested the airport's future is "a matter for London and Londoners," and that he would listen to community views before deciding a way forward. Current plans from Heathrow Airport management aim for planning approval by 2029, with the additional runway not expected to be operational until 2039. However, Mr.
Griffith is set to reject this timeline, stating,
I refuse to accept for a single moment that the country of (Isambard Kingdom) Brunel and (Joseph) Bazalgette... has to sit around waiting until the 2040s to get a third runway built.
He believes that countries on the rise have the best infrastructure and connectivity, and that Britain's national hub airport is being held back. Heathrow Airport's chief executive, Thomas Woldbye, has welcomed the growing consensus for expansion, particularly the Conservative leadership's recognition of the airport's role in driving growth across the UK.
Woldbye stated that Heathrow and its investors are ready to work with politicians across the spectrum to finally get the third runway built, highlighting the broad interest in this major infrastructure project.
