WhatsApp has introduced a new Incognito Chat mode for its Meta AI chats, promising brighter privacy for conversations with the AI assistant. The feature is built on Meta’s Private Processing technology, which the company says makes the chat invisible to anyone else. In practice, that means conversations can involve highly sensitive topics—like financial details, health information, personal issues, or confidential work data—without the risk of others accessing them.
According to WhatsApp, Incognito Chat creates a confidential, temporary space where only the user can see the dialogue, and even Meta itself cannot read the messages. The system processes conversations in a protected cloud environment called Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs), designed to prevent access by outside parties and to ensure conversations do not remain permanently stored by default.
WhatsApp emphasizes that Incognito Chat is truly private in its wording: “no one can read your conversation, not even us.” The mode is described as a temporary, private space for interacting with the Meta AI chatbot, with conversations disappearing automatically unless the user chooses to retain them. The feature is rolling out to users, aligning with ongoing industry efforts to address privacy concerns around AI-powered chat and data handling in messaging apps.
