Angela Perryman, 47, was among 18 Americans quarantined in the U.S. after cases of Andes hantavirus were identified aboard a cruise ship earlier this year. The group was initially placed in a quarantine unit located in Nebraska. According to Department of Health and Human Services officials, the 42-day monitoring period for these individuals was set to conclude at midnight on June 21, as it began upon their return to the United States on May 10. Most remaining passengers at the facility are expected to be released on June 22.
However, Perryman's case has become a focal point of debate. While the World Health Organization recommends a 42-day monitoring period for high-risk contacts, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had previously requested individuals stay until May 31, the issue now revolves around Secretary Kennedy's direct intervention. The New York Times reported that some passengers were permitted to complete their quarantine at home until June 22, provided local health officials could ensure monitoring by law enforcement or community health workers. Perryman wished to return to her home in Florida, but the state reportedly declined to provide the necessary monitoring.
Despite the approaching end of the recommended monitoring period and her desire to leave, Perryman remains under forced quarantine. Sources indicate that during a quarantine hearing, the CDC supported her continued observation.
