FIFA vs. UEFA: "Smear Campaign" in World Cup Sell-Off Row!

The world of football is once again embroiled in a high-stakes dispute, as global governing body FIFA has publicly accused its European counterpart, UEFA, of orchestrating a "smear campaign." This explosive accusation comes in a court filing by FIFA, directly addressing UEFA's recent legal maneuvers aimed at uncovering details surrounding FIFA President Gianni Infantino's controversial, and ultimately abandoned, plan to sell stakes in the World Cup.

Last week, UEFA launched discovery requests in three U.S. courts, including the Southern District of New York, Florida, and Colorado, seeking evidence related to Infantino's proposal. The plan, known as the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), aimed to offload stakes in the prestigious World Cup and other FIFA competitions to private equity investors for a staggering $4.2 billion.

However, the proposal faced significant backlash and was withdrawn on August 1, just days after it was made public. In a sharp counter-move, FIFA filed a motion in the U.S. District Court in Colorado on Thursday, asking for the discovery process to be deferred or entirely dropped.

FIFA's filing didn't mince words, stating,

While these applications are styled as legal pleadings with captions and docket numbers, they are little more than press releases in further support of UEFA's smear campaign against FIFA and its leadership.

This suggests a deeply rooted power struggle and mistrust between the two most influential bodies in international football. The controversy also draws in prominent figures outside of traditional football circles.

One of UEFA's discovery requests specifically targeted Josh Kushner, the younger brother of Jared Kushner, and his investment firm Thrive Capital Management. Thrive was reportedly involved in the FFE proposal. Kushner himself recently defended the motivations behind the plan in a statement to Axios, but admitted to underestimating the political landscape.

He noted, "While we stand behind the motivations of FFE, we failed to appreciate the political dynamics of global football, and the lengths some would go to.

Thrive has a long track record of being a partner to all constituents.

Had we known what this would devolve into, we would not have gotten involved.” Additional discovery requests were also filed in Florida, where FIFA maintained its operational base for the 2026 World Cup, and in Colorado, targeting Greg Maffei, an adviser to Infantino and former CEO of Liberty Media. This multi-front legal battle highlights the intense friction between FIFA and UEFA, threatening to overshadow the sport itself as they clash over governance, financial control, and the future direction of international football competitions.
