UK Govt Urges "Small Steps" Preparedness for Crises & Cyber Threats!
Facing cyber threats, extreme weather, and supply chain shocks, the UK government is urging citizens to take "small steps" to prepare. Discover what you can do to secure your household now!
The British public is being urged to take "small but important steps" to bolster their household resilience against potential national crises. Downing Street has announced a new campaign aimed at preparing citizens for events such as severe weather emergencies, national shocks, and sophisticated cyber-attacks, emphasizing the need to secure basic amenities like water, power supplies, and phone signals.
Darren Jones, the chief secretary to the prime minister, highlighted the escalating risks posed by climate change, warning of "significant and prolonged disruption to essential services" that extreme weather events could unleash. Beyond natural disasters, Jones also pointed to the growing threat of "hostile cyber-attacks against businesses and critical infrastructure," fueled by increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence and ongoing global conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.
In response to these evolving threats, the UK's national risk register has undergone an update, incorporating seven new crises. These include the danger of foreign interference in UK democracy, the potential for cyber-attacks targeting data infrastructure, water systems, and police networks, and a "digital resilience failure" scenario, exemplified by the global technology outage caused by the CrowdStrike disruption in 2024.
Concerns about Britain's preparedness are not new. Ministers were reportedly warned in May that the nation's vital supply chains were ill-equipped for a major shock, such as a large-scale conflict. Experts from the National Preparedness Commission, in research shared privately in Westminster, suggested that the UK is lagging behind other European countries in "worst-case scenario" planning and the stockpiling of essential supplies. This new government campaign aims to bridge that gap by empowering individuals to contribute to national resilience, starting with practical measures at home.
