Uttar Pradesh politics is abuzz with explosive claims of a potential split within the Samajwadi Party (SP). State Minister OP Rajbhar has sensationally alleged that the entire Samajwadi Party is "sitting ready" to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He specifically pointed fingers at senior SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav, claiming Yadav had approached the Centre amidst pressure over alleged corruption cases.
Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal, however, has vehemently dismissed these charges. When confronted with Rajbhar's claims, he retorted, "Ask Amit Shah," suggesting the allegations were politically motivated or perhaps originated from the BJP's side. This heated exchange comes at a time when several major opposition parties across India are grappling with significant internal rebellions and potential defections.
The situation in Uttar Pradesh mirrors similar turmoil seen in other states. In West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is facing one of its biggest crises since the recent Assembly elections. The party is dealing with both a rebellion by MLAs in the state assembly and a revolt by MPs in Parliament. A faction of 58 TMC MLAs has reportedly backed Ritabrata Banerjee's bid for the Leader of the Opposition post, challenging the party's official choice. This internal dispute has even led to a legal battle, with the TMC approaching the Calcutta High Court. Further complicating matters, MP Kakoli Ghosh claimed the support of 19 other lawmakers and announced their backing for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). This group of 20 MPs is reportedly seeking to merge with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), a move that, if approved by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, could help them evade the anti-defection law.
Meanwhile, in Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT) is also battling rampant speculation of a split, with what's being dubbed ‘Operation Tiger’ gaining significant momentum. This operation allegedly involves attempts by the Eknath Shinde faction of Shiv Sena and the BJP to poach elected representatives from Sena (UBT). The situation intensified recently with claims from leaders of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena that six MPs from the rival Sena (UBT) are likely to form a separate group. These MPs are expected to submit a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, intending to merge with the Sena’s Lok Sabha unit.
Insiders have indicated that three Sena (UBT) MPs – Sanjay Jadhav, Sanjay Deshmukh, and Bhausaheb Wakchaure – were in New Delhi and reportedly unresponsive to calls from their party leaders, fueling further speculation. The six MPs rumored to be part of this breakaway group include Sanjay Jadhav (Parbhani), Bhausaheb Wakchaure (Shirdi), and Sanjay Deshmukh (Yavatmal), alongside Nagesh Patil Ashtikar (Hingoli).
These incidents collectively paint a picture of significant political instability and realignment across India, as various parties grapple with internal dissent and external pressures. The claims surrounding the Samajwadi Party add another layer to this complex national political landscape, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by opposition parties.
