Mumbai and surrounding coastal districts are currently under a red alert as extremely heavy rainfall continues to batter the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted intense showers, accompanied by gusty winds reaching up to 60 kmph, and a high tide warning for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. The red alert is expected to remain in effect for July 4, 5, and 6 in these areas.
As a precautionary measure, schools and colleges in Mumbai were closed for the afternoon session today. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has urged residents in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and the Pune-Nashik belt to strictly adhere to official weather advisories and avoid all unnecessary travel. The Chief Minister emphasized the need for caution to prevent accidents caused by the severe weather.
The state government is actively monitoring the situation, issuing regular weather alerts, and disseminating advisories through SMS messages every three hours, alongside other communication channels. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the State Disaster Management Cell are closely tracking developments to respond to any emergencies.
However, the onset of the monsoon has once again brought to light significant civic preparedness issues in Mumbai. The city’s annual struggle with heavy rains has already resulted in tragic incidents, including the death of a boy due to a fallen tree and a man drowning in an open manhole. Commuters have faced widespread disruptions, with flooded roads and delayed trains becoming a common sight, fueling public discussion on social media about the city's recurring monsoon challenges. CM Fadnavis also stated that "genuine deficiencies in newly built infrastructure, including the Connecting Link on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway, would be rectified."
