England is once again bracing for extreme heat as amber health alerts have been issued across most of the country, with temperatures expected to soar into the mid-30s Celsius. Forecasters predict the mercury could peak at a sweltering 36°C on Thursday, marking another significant heatwave for the summer.
The amber alerts, signifying a high risk to health, will be in effect from Tuesday, August 11, at 9 am until Friday, August 14, at 9 pm. Regions under the amber alert include the East Midlands, East of England, Yorkshire and the Humber, London, North West, South East, South West, and West Midlands. A yellow alert has also been issued for the North East.
This latest heatwave is being driven by high pressure becoming dominant over the UK, bringing ample sunshine and allowing temperatures to build daily. Southerly and southeasterly winds are also tapping into the hot conditions currently over Europe, contributing to the intense heat.
Compounding the heat concerns, more areas of England are anticipated to fall into drought conditions. The prolonged dry weather has led to significant water shortages, with England and Wales experiencing their driest July on record.
While cooler air is expected to spread from the north-west over the weekend, potentially bringing some showers or longer spells of rain, forecasters warn that any rainfall will likely not be enough to compensate for the significant shortfall accumulated over recent weeks and months. Residents are advised to take precautions to stay safe and hydrated during this period of extreme heat.
