Protests Erupt in Bhadrak After 10-Year-Old Girl Raped and Murdered

In Bhadrak district's Chandbali area, a 10-year-old girl who left for school on Tuesday did not return home. Her body was found later in Baligaon, described by family as blood-stained; authorities say preliminary findings point to sexual assault and murder. The discovery triggered immediate outrage, with locals taking to the streets and blocking roads to demand swift justice and arrests.
By Wednesday, villagers staged a prolonged road blockade in Baligaon, then expanded their protest, even storming government offices and the Chandbali police station. The mob tore down the house of the accused, Satyabrata Das, who was arrested from Jagatsinghpur district on Wednesday morning. Four others were detained for questioning as police mounted a broader search. Security forces were deployed to restore order and calm the area.
Political reactions added to the tension. The Biju Janata Dal and Congress demanded the Chief Minister Mohan Majhi's resignation, calling for a bandh. The Chief Minister expressed grief, announced 10 lakh from the CM Relief Fund for the victim’s family, and promised the severest punishment for the culprits. The Law Minister said suspects are arrested within 48-72 hours under the current government, and policing will be tightened.
Meanwhile, officials warned against inflammatory actions while the opposition pressed for swifter action and accountability. Protests continued, with calls for stronger protections for minors in Odisha and for a transparent investigation that holds perpetrators to account. Authorities also said they would evict illegal shops and curb illicit liquor and ganja sales in the area as part of a broader drive to restore order.
As investigations proceed, residents remain on edge, awaiting justice for the 10-year-old and seeking assurances that the state will do more to safeguard children in the future.
