Modi: Democracy Delivers in India as Global Speakers Gather for CSPOC 2026

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) in New Delhi, where about 61 speakers and presiding officers from 42 Commonwealth nations are attending. He framed the gathering around democracy delivering results in India, stressing that democratic institutions provide stability, speed, and scale to development and that the people remain at the heart of governance. Modi emphasized that India's strength lies in turning diversity into a force for progress.

Modi highlighted that India has transformed its vast diversity into the strength of its democracy, noting that democracy, in his view, equates to last-mile delivery where welfare measures reach every individual without discrimination. He recalled the doubts that accompanied independence about whether democracy could survive in such a diverse nation and argued that the country has proven those doubts wrong by demonstrating resilience and inclusive progress.

The prime minister pointed to tangible welfare outcomes, noting that around 25 crore people have emerged from poverty in recent years. The CSPOC, hosted by India for the fourth time, brings delegates together to discuss how speakers and presiding officers can sustain and strengthen democratic institutions in the modern era. The conference also serves as a platform to share best practices on governance, transparency, and accountability across the Commonwealth.

Additionally, Modi touched on the role of technology, saying AI and emerging tech have increased the efficiency of democracy while urging vigilance against misuse. The event underscores India’s push to showcase innovative governance solutions and deepen cooperation with Global South partners, reinforcing a shared commitment to inclusive, people-centric governance.
